Ice-breaker welcome party   (31/08/2025 – 19:00÷23:00)

At “Monastero degli Olivetani”

Monastero degli Olivetani is an ancient monastic complex located near the municipal cemetery and adjacent to the church of Saints Niccolò and Cataldo. It was built at the end of the 12th century by Tancredi d’Altavilla, the last Norman count of Lecce, with the aim of creating an imposing religious complex. The name derives from the Benedictine monks of Monte Oliveto who, having arrived in Lecce in 1494, took up residence in the structure, adapting it to their needs. The structure is distinguished by two cloisters, one square and the other rectangular, surrounded by an elegant portico with slightly pointed arches, supported by many columns. On the northern side, there are the spaces on the first floor that were once the monks’ cells. In 1559, Gabriele Riccardi was commissioned to build a new cloister with twin columns, enriched by a canopied well supported by twisted Corinthian columns. In addition to the remarkable architectural beauty, the many traces of frescoes that adorn the walls are of particular interest, tangible evidence of episodes of monastic life. Some of these frescoes have been attributed to the Byzantine period..
